While The Defiant is Out

This is the crew/cast of Deep Space Nine:

Check out the embarrassingly TENSO Bashir.
And this is the crew of the Defiant:
Is that a Venture Bros. reference? Why yes, yes it is.

Am I the only person who sees a problem with this? You know, aside from the fact that if I go by the cast photo, it means that I can --rather erroneously-- assume that Jake and Quark are in charge when the rest of the cast gets on the Defiant?

Okay. It's obviously not Jake and Quark, so this begs one very serious question: Who takes care of Deep Space Nine when ALL the senior officers are aboard, including the COMMANDER OF THE SPACESTATION.

So, let's think about this in the context of Star Trek. Do you remember how Picard led all the away missions? Wait. You don't? Well  that's because you don't put the man in charge in danger and cause a crisis in chain-in-command unless you're an utter dumbass like Captain Kirk is. You put the red-shirted guy with a beard down on the planet and be thankful you no longer have to run away from fatal oil sludges.

I would think, then, that the same logic would apply for Deep Space Nine, seeing as it is a station on one of the most volatile borders in the entire Alpha Quadrant. Yes, you sort of need a ship like the Defiant to go out and kick shit in the ass, but what you don't need to do is put your RANKING COMMANDER on the ship that routinely almost explodes.

Also, what is the security officer on the station doing on the ship, far far away from his job of tracking down criminals?  And for that matter, why is your senior doctor there? Shouldn't he be where his talents will be most used, not on a battle ship where you only need your most basic doctors to help with concussions and burns?

And lastly, has anyone else noticed that shit goes down on the station when O'Brien is on the Defiant, where he is unable to do anything about it? Plot device, you say? Irresponsibility, says I!

Really, the only one that makes sense on the bridge of the Defiant is Worf, the Strategic Operations Officer, because, really, it's not like you need to do something particularly strategic with a space station.

"If it all possible."
It's also not like Worf serves any purpose in the series anyway aside from "Please like this as much you liked TNG because we put Worf on it". The Defiant is just the place for him.

That being said, I think the internet has found an answer for my over-thinking:

Ah, I get it. Star Trek isn't real...

  1. Actually, I've seen some episodes where Kira Nerys is commanding DS9 while the rest of the gang gets its ass kicked on the Defiant. But I know what you mean. That's the problem with having a small ensemble when you need everyone on the Really Important Missions™.

That being said, I've been enjoying your blog for this entry, "The Real Victims Of The X-Files" and your Contact review (because I'm a huge fan of Sagan; I'm even going through his Cosmos series again). Soooooo I think I'll sub to your RSS and keep an eye on ya, one sci-fi geek to another. x'D

Tried this in Firefox and it seems to have worked! Seems your Blogger template hates Safari? =O

  2. Okay. That is true about Kira, but what about the rest? Explain to me Odo, good sir! :) His entire job is taking care of the station. He has no place on the Defiant!

And thaaaaanks! Sagan fans are always welcome to sub my RSS and leave comments :)
